Mississippi Radio Direction Finding Hunt Rules

All MSRDF Sponsored Hunts and Events are free of charge. Occasionally, we will hold one in a state or national park, which requires a modest ($4) entrance fee per vehicle, payable at the gate. The locations that do are prime places for hunts and well worth the entrance fee.

All Hunts are NOT Fox Hunts:

There are many different types of radio direction finding hunts. Fox Hunts, T-Hunts, ARDF events, and ROCA events are the most popular. Each of them are different from the others and have their own set of rules.

Unfortunately, a lot of well meaning folks mistakenly call all of the different types of radio direction finding hunts “Fox Hunts.” This causes unnecessary confusion on the part of participants, who are unsure exactly what type of event they are signing up for.

Below, you will find descriptions and rules for each of the types of RDF Hunts and Events that Mississippi Radio Direction Finding hosts.

Before perusing them, we want to alert you to one VERY BIG difference between Fox Hunts and all of the other types of radio direction finding hunts. Regardless of whether it is a Mobile Fox Hunt, a Pedestrian Fox Hunt, or a Combination Fox Hunt, the Fox is always a LIVE PERSON (not an unmanned transmitter), who is manually keying up the Mic and speaking into it during the Hunt. In none of the other of RDF hunts or events do you search for a live person. If you remember that, you will never get confused again about what constitutes a Fox Hunt.

A T-Hunt utilizes one or more unmanned transmitter (though the hider may be near by keeping an eye on it, and logging the finders into the T-Hunt Log Book) and hunters hunt mobile, with a possible short walk at the end.

An ARDF event utilizes between 3 and 6 synchronized unmanned transmitters spread out up to a mile apart and hunters hunt on foot. The focus is on speed and a bit of athleticism may be required to win these,

A ROCA event event utilizes 6 and 20 synchronized unmanned transmitters located in a small area, such as a park. The focus is on solid RDF skills locating the real transmitters among a field of fake transmitters. Athleticism plays no role at all in this type of event.
